Adjusting to Your Denture
While you adjust to your denture, or your newly relined denture, it’s very common to experience discomfort. It can take around 2 to 4 weeks for you to get used to your denture, especially if it’s your first denture and you are still recovering from your teeth extraction. Here are some tips to help you adjust:
- Chewing will be difficult at first so start by eating soft and well cooked food. Start to gradually return to your regular diet once you feel more comfortable with your denture. It’s recommended you avoid tough foods for the first few weeks.
- If you are having trouble with pronouncing certain words, practice by reading out loud as this can help your tongue adjust to your denture.
- Massage your gums to improve circulation and reduce pain.
- You might have excess or lack of saliva at first because your mouth is not used to having dentures, and your brain can mistake the denture for food. Frequently sip small amounts of water to help your mouth feel more comfortable.
- Use adhesives if your denture is slipping, but visit your prosthetist if it continues to feel loose as this indicates that the denture doesn’t fit properly.

How to Clean Your Denture
You should treat your dentures just like your natural teeth and brush them daily with a soft bristled brush. It’s also recommended that you frequently rinse your denture under running water to prevent debris build up. To prevent accidental damage, make sure to place a towel in the sink to provide a cushion for the denture in case you drop it. Always soak your denture in water or a denture cleaner to keep it moist when you are not wearing it.
Even with proper oral hygiene routines, it is still recommended that you replace your denture every 5 to 7 years, and reline them every 2 years. If you are experiencing continuous gum bleeding, swelling in the gums and eyes, sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, and sores in the mouth, visit a dentist immediately as they may be signs of serious gum disease and will require immediate treatment.
