WHAT ARE IMMEDIATE DENTURES?

Seperator_3

Immediate dentures are full or partial dentures that are replacements for your extracted teeth. They are meant to be temporary, so the patient can have teeth immediately after their teeth extraction. At Burleigh Denture Clinic, we offer same day service for immediate dentures so you don’t have to wait around for your dentures.

The purpose of immediate dentures is to fill the gaps of missing teeth so you can feel more comfortable after your teeth extraction. Immediate dentures can also promote faster healing in the gums as it can minimise bleeding. Once your gums are fully healed, your immediate dentures will start to feel loose. This is normal as your gums will shrink as part of the healing process, because they no longer need to support real teeth. Our prosthetist can then construct a new and permanent denture, custom fitted to your new bite shape.

You can also choose to keep your immediate dentures, but you will require a permanent reline to ensure comfort and prevent damage in your gums

WHAT’S THE PROCESS FOR IMMEDIATE DENTURES?

Seperator_3

Before you undergo your teeth extraction, our prosthetist will make an impression of your natural teeth. At Burleigh Denture Clinic, we use top of the line Enigma or Valplast dentures that can be customised to suit you. Your dentist will then place your denture in immediately after the teeth extraction.

Because immediate dentures were not fitted before being made, it may feel slightly awkward and uncomfortable. Our prosthetist can provide relines, temporary lining and tissue conditioners to help the denture fit more comfortably.

Payments for additional tissue conditioners, liners and relines are separate from the payments for the immediate denture.

We can provide a free quote and consultation for all patients so you can feel assured and have complete peace of mind. Changing to dentures can be an intimidating experience, so we are here to help you every step of the way with any questions you might have.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is a reline?

Relining is a procedure that reshapes the denture so it sits more comfortably against your gums.

  • How long do I need to keep the immediate dentures in for?

We recommend wearing your immediate dentures for at least the first 24 hours of your teeth extraction. The denture can act as a bandaid for your gums as it can help reduce bleeding and swelling.

  • Are immediate dentures permanent?

Immediate dentures are meant to be substitutes until your permanent dentures. This is because your immediate dentures are made prior to your teeth extraction, which can feel uncomfortable as your gums shrink as part of the recovery process. You can keep using your immediate dentures even after your gums have recovered, but it will require frequent relining.

  • What to expect after getting immediate dentures?

The first few weeks with an immediate denture can be difficult due to the pain from the extraction. As you adjust to having a denture, you may experience increased saliva, difficulty in eating and speaking, gagging and facial contour.

  • Are immediate dentures necessary?

Immediate dentures aren’t necessary but it can minimise the embarrassment from having missing teeth. Immediate dentures can also act as a bandaid for your gums and improve the recovery process after teeth extraction.
