What is a reline?

A reline is a procedure that reshapes the denture so it can sit more comfortably against your gums. Dentures must fit strongly and securely against your gums to ensure perfect functionality. Relining is recommended every 2 years as your gums can shrink over time, causing your denture to be uncomfortable and painful as it no longer fits perfectly against your new gum shape. Weight loss and general ageing can also cause your face shape to change, which means your denture must also be realigned. We will take an updated impression of your gums to ensure a perfect fit.

Our licensed prosthetist uses a soft and hard denture liner that is made from acrylic, medical grade rubber or silicone to reshape your denture. Soft liners are ideal for elderly patients or those with highly sensitive gums as it provides greater comfort, and acts as a cushion between your gums and your firm denture base.

Soft liners are a great solution for painful dentures but it is not a permanent remedy. The porous material of the liner means it can attract more bacteria, causing faster deterioration. The liner will also harden over time and must be replaced frequently if good denture care is not practiced. Typically, soft liners must be replaced every 2 years to prevent discomfort.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why does it hurt when I put my dentures on?

If you experience pain when putting on your dentures, the pain is often caused by the lack of tissue around the jawbone. When you put your dentures on, it places increased pressure on your jawbone, which can cause pain when chewing or speaking. A soft reline can provide cushioning around the jawbone to prevent pain.

  • How long does a soft reline last?

Soft relines can provide comfort to your existing dentures, but it is only a temporary solution. The liner will harden over time and is prone to attracting bacteria. Soft liners will require a replacement every 1 to 2 years.

  • How often do I need a denture reline?

Typically, a reline is needed every 2 years to ensure a tight fit against your gums. But you should consider a reline if your dentures feel loose, or you are experiencing pain and discomfort whilst wearing your dentures.

  • If soft denture reline isn’t a permanent solution, what is?

If you want to save yourself frequent visits to change your soft liner, you can always choose to replace your denture completely. New dentures are usually required every 5 to 7 years due to every day wear and tear. A brand new denture made with an updated impression of your gums will require less maintenance compared to a soft reline.

  • What are the benefits of a soft reline?

A soft reline can help tighten the fit without needing a brand new denture. The material is soft and comfortable, making it ideal for post operative patients, elderly patients or patients with sensitive gums.
